The art form of dance provides the potential for expression through movement. Its use of nonverbal communication allows dance to give learners the opportunity to participate in a way that is different from any other area of conventional learning.

Ballet is the oldest devised dance technique and it requires years of training to learn and master, with considerable practice required to retain proficiency and skill. Ballet develops alignment, coordination, musicality, strength, flexibility and refined elegance in movement and it is a fundamental technique in the training of a dancer. Ballet at APPA-NI follows the Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus.

Progressing Ballet Technique is an innovative training system developed by Marie Walton-Mahon for students to understand the depth of training muscle memory in achieving their personal best in classical ballet. The training is a wonderful teaching tool that enhances ballet training.

Modern Jazz Dance is fun and energetic including elements of contemporary and commercial dance techniques often making it a fast, physical and motivating form of dance. Modern Stage examinations are offered following the National Association of Teachers of Dancing syllabus.

Contemporary dance uses the strong and controlled legwork of Ballet whilst employing contract-release, fall and recovery and the improvisation characteristics of modern dance. Contemporary dance at APPA-NI follows the National Association of Teachers of Dancing syllabus.

Xplor Dance Programme for Paraplegic Dancers is a community dance initiative which aims to explore, develop and create dance movement experiences relevant to the requirements of paraplegic dancers aged 4 through to adults. Our aim is to increase opportunities for artistic expression through movement whilst empowering young paraplegic people and adults with leadership and social skills that foster self-confidence, esteem and pride in performance. Sessions with Xplor teachers include coordinated movement exercises that involve both arms, the torso, neck, head and the shoulders.
