Acrobatics — Tumbling
Acrobatic Tumbling
Develop strength, flexibility and tumbling skills in a safe, professional environment. Our Acrobatics / Tumbling programme welcomes beginners through to advanced athletes across a range of age groups.
The Programme
Tumbling built on safe, progressive technique
Our Acrobatics / Tumbling training sits within the Academy of Professional Physical Arts, a specialist physical arts centre in Castlereagh, Belfast. Sessions focus on strength, flexibility, control and the safe progression of tumbling skills, so learners build confidence at their own pace rather than rushing towards the hardest passes.
Whether a participant is trying tumbling for the first time or refining competition-level routines, the emphasis stays on correct technique, controlled landings and a supportive training environment.
- Acrobatic and tumbling technique with a clear progression pathway
- Strength and flexibility development alongside tumbling skills
- Coaching delivered in a specialist facility with appropriate equipment
- Open to a range of age groups and ability levels
How Training Works
A step-by-step approach
- Foundations. Core strength, flexibility and tumbling shapes are established first, giving learners the base needed for everything that follows.
- Technique. Acrobatic skills are broken down and rehearsed, with close attention to alignment, momentum and safe landing mechanics.
- Progression. As confidence grows, passes and combinations are linked together, progressing toward more advanced tumbling work.
- Performance. Skills are shaped into routines so that participants can perform with composure, artistry and control.

Acrobatic tumbling at APPA-NI forms part of a broader physical arts programme in Castlereagh, Belfast, where dance, gymnastics and aerial disciplines share one purpose-built facility. The tumbling sessions welcome complete beginners alongside more advanced athletes, and they are organised by age group so that progression feels natural rather than pressured. Emphasis is placed on safe, progressive technique, with careful attention paid to strength, flexibility and body control before new skills are introduced. The result is a disciplined but encouraging learning environment.
Every class begins with the fundamentals. Coaches work methodically through strength and conditioning, flexibility development and controlled drills that prepare the body for inversion and rotation. Skills are introduced in a sensible order, so each movement builds logically on the one before it, and learners gain a genuine understanding of how their bodies move through space. This careful scaffolding is what allows participants progress with confidence and reduces the likelihood of avoidable injury.
Beyond the apparatus work itself, tumbling encourages transferable qualities that support a dancer's wider development. Balance, spatial awareness, timing and spatial reasoning all improve, as does the ability to work within a group and follow coaching guidance. Because the Academy brings ballet, jazz, contemporary, rhythmic gymnastics and aerial arts together, tumbling students often find their range of movement naturally widens, and techniques learned in one discipline frequently inform another.
APPA-NI occupies a specialist physical arts centre in Castlereagh, carefully designed and finished to high standards for the many disciplines it houses. From a young age, learners are encouraged to explore multiple forms of movement and technique, supported by experienced tuition and a welcoming attitude towards boys, adults and participants with additional needs. The ethos is that a rich, varied training background creates the strongest foundation for any future performer, coach or teacher.
Choosing a path within physical arts does not have to mean choosing a single discipline. Many learners combine tumbling with dance classes, rhythmic gymnastics or aerial work, discovering which combination suits them best and where their individual talent lies. The Academy's calendar of classes and term-based schedule makes it easier to fit training around school, work and family commitments, while summer schools and holiday programmes offer additional opportunities to practise, refine and showcase new skills.
